How does a desktop app differ from a web app?
A web app runs in the browser and the data is on a server, so everyone sees the same thing and nothing needs installing. A desktop app is installed on the computer. It has full access to devices and files and can work without an internet connection.
When should you choose a desktop app?
- the program works with devices: label printers, scales, scanners, readers
- work must continue without internet, for example in a warehouse or on a production floor
- the program processes large files locally
- it has to work with software installed on the same computer, for example Subiekt GT
When is a web app enough?
- users work from different places and devices, including phones
- shared, up-to-date data matters most
- a new version has to reach everyone at once
- customers or partners of the company use the system too
How do desktop app updates work?
A program with automatic updates downloads and installs new versions by itself, so everyone works on the same release. A web app does not have this problem: the new version goes to the server and everyone sees it straight away.
Can you combine both approaches?
Yes. A common setup is a web app for the office and customers, plus a light desktop program at workstations that handle devices or must work offline. Both use the same server and the same data.
How much does a desktop app cost compared with a web app?
At KCD Studio web apps start from PLN 3,000, and desktop apps are quoted individually. The cost depends on the number of features, integrations with devices and other software, and offline work. The initial quote is free.
Frequently asked questions
Electron, Tauri or .NET for a desktop app?
Electron and Tauri let you release the same program for Windows, macOS and Linux, and Tauri produces smaller, lighter programs. .NET is the natural choice for programs that run only on Windows. KCD Studio chooses the technology to fit the client’s environment. See details
Can a web app work without internet?
Partly. As a PWA it can keep some data on the device and synchronize it when the connection returns. When offline work is essential, a desktop or mobile app is often the better choice. See details
